The folks at Magellan Studio, home of Magellan Mapping Company and Whopping Big Prints & Images, have brought home decor to a new level with their company¹s new product line. SmartArt, customizable art work that can be applied to walls, windows and other surfaces with just a touch, is gaining national attention.

It will be showcased on ABC's Extreme Makeover Home Edition on Oct. 12. Magellan Mapping Company designed a mural for the home in Richland Center that fits just perfectly, then Whopping Big Prints & Images printed the piece.

That led to another Extreme Makeover customized piece for a New York gym said Lisa Pertzborn-Whiting, one of three business owners. With partners Marily Crews-Nelson and Doug Crews-Nelson, the Extreme Makeover design team created murals that feature famous boxers for the inner-city gym.

SmartArt is the perfect decorating material. The fabrics, which come in a variety of textures that can even look like canvas, has an adhesive on the back and can be easily attached to just about any surface. ³This stuff is amazing,² Lisa said. ³We have no problems with it peeling paint off of walls or leaving behind any residue.

If the artwork needs to repositioned, it peels right off and can be reapplied.³Because of the technology that we have, we can create something that¹s not going to fade or lose its vibrancy," Lisa said.

Magellan Studio has over 100 designs already created, from jungle rooms to Beatles-themed rooms. ³We can scan a quilt and make SmartArt out of that to match your decor,² Lisa said.

The same holds true for photographs or other art that is not copywritten. Because SmartArt is easily removable, it is a perfect option for children¹s rooms. The themes can be changed as the child grows and tastes change. And SmartArt takes only seconds to apply, saving time in painting.

It¹s also ideal for businesses renting space and for trade shows. The popularity of the product has allowed the company to hire more part-time staff and extend its job program.

Magellan Studio continues to produce the Whopping Big Prints & Images large signs, banners, posters and graphics. They also create maps for area organizations such as the Waunakee-Westport Chamber of Commerce and the DeForest Chamber of Commerce.

The community-based company creates signs for local benefits, such as the Kolb Family Fundraiser, the Waunakee Neighborhood Connection and the Wisconsin Public Television Auction.

Magellan Studio grew out of a company that the three business partners began in 2000. When the three moved the company from the Crews-Nelsons¹ home two years ago to the Arboretum Office Park, they began the Whopping Big Prints & Images division.

They purchased a Gerber Solara UV2 printer, allowing them to create large prints on a variety of surfaces. And now with SmartArt, their business has branched out in a new direction,offering customers more choices for wall decor and signage.
